River Paddle (Saturday)

Date: 6th July 2024 Location: Ripon Canal Basin Sections: Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Scout Network, Adult Volunteer Event Organiser: Water Programme Team

This new event is for those who have either achieved the Paddle UK Discover Award or spent at least two full days training with us and will help develop your paddling skills in either Kayak or Canoe.

On the Ripon to Boroughbridge trip, you will travel down the length of the Ripon Canal and on to the River Ure for a journey of approximately 9 miles. All the time the scenery is ever changing and wildlife abounds. Passing the back of Newby Hall gives you a view of the house and gardens along with waves from the visitors and, maybe, a toot from the train!

There are 4 locks on the trip that we have to lift, or “portage”, the canoes and kayaks around; giving you an insight into some of the journeying skills using these craft. The last one, West Wick, is where we stop for your well earned packed lunch and drinks. After that, it is a relaxing paddle down the river to the finish at Boroughbridge.

The starting point is the canal basin in Ripon on Bondgate; there we sort out boats and equipment and a quick brief and then on to the water.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
