International
Scout HQ requires a Scout County to be the lead body for attendance at any international Scouting event or trip. This team has two key responsibilities –
- Providing advice, and approving any international trips planned by volunteers in our County.
- Supporting and coordinating young people to attend international jamborees, hosted by other country’s Scout communities.
Jamboree is a term often associated with Scouting, and it is a large-scale internationally-attended camp. The regular events are Roverway, Moot and the World Scout Jamboree (WSJ).
The WSJ is held every four years for young people aged 14 – 17. Scout HQ coordinates the UK contingent of participants. They delegate to the Counties to organise the individual units of young people. Previous events have been held in the USA (2019), Japan (2015), Sweden (2011) and the UK (2007).
The most recent Jamboree took place in summer 2023 in South Korea. 5,000 young people and adult volunteers from the UK will be joined by 35,000 Scouts and Guides from around the world for a 12 day camp.
Participants are chosen via a selection weekend, two years before the Jamboree is held. The group then attend training weekends, to bond as a group, to learn about the host country, and to help fundraise to get them all there. The fee to attend the Jamboree is set by Scout HQ, and Counties can add in a fee to cover the cost of training weekends. The County then facilitates the payment of instalments to Scout HQ.
