Harrogate B&Q Team Restored the Scout Fire Pit Area and Brought New Life to an Outdoor Space
1st Pannal Scout Group received an incredible act of generosity when a hardworking team from Harrogate B&Q arrived to completely
transform the fire pit area. Over time the space had become difficult to use and required both attention and equipment that the group did not have readily available. The B&Q team volunteered their time, skills and energy to bring the area back to a safe, welcoming and practical outdoor space that can now be enjoyed by young people and volunteers for years to come.
The Harrogate B&Q team arrived fully prepared for the job ahead. They brought tools, materials and equipment for every part of the work, and in a further act of kindness they left the tools with the group so that the space can be maintained long into the future. Their generosity demonstrated a strong sense of community and a genuine desire to support a group that provides meaningful experiences for local young people.
The transformation began early in the day when the team assessed the condition of the fire pit area and planned how best to tackle the tasks safely. The space had become overgrown, uneven and weather worn, and several sections required clearing, levelling and rebuilding. The team set to work with enthusiasm and showed excellent teamwork which impressed everyone who came to observe the progress. Volunteers from 1st Pannal Scout Group were present throughout the day to offer help, refreshments and support.
As the work continued the fire pit area steadily returned to life. Weeds were cleared, edges were rebuilt, surfaces were made safe and the whole section began to look cared for once again. The B&Q team made sure that every part of the space was not only functional but also inviting. Their effort will allow the area to be used for outdoor cooking, programme sessions and group gatherings. These outdoor activities are important for young people as they provide opportunities for teamwork, practical learning and shared experiences that build confidence and resilience.
One volunteer summed up the impact of the day by saying:
“The generosity shown by the Harrogate B&Q team was remarkable. They gave their time, their skills and even left us tools. Thanks to them, our young people now have a fantastic outdoor space to learn, cook and spend time together.”
Volunteers from 1st Pannal Scout Group expressed their gratitude throughout the day and commented on how much the renewed space would enhance future sessions. Having a practical outdoor area is particularly valuable for the group as it allows young people to spend time outside, learn new skills and enjoy the natural environment in a safe and engaging way. The fire pit area has always been a popular part of the site and its restoration means that these activities can continue safely and more often.
The group shared a sincere thank you to the Harrogate B&Q team for their hard work, generosity and willingness to give up their time. The transformation was far more than a tidy up. It was a meaningful contribution that will support the group for many years.
There was also growing excitement among the volunteers who were already looking forward to the first smores fire in the renewed and much improved space
