49th Eastfield Scouts from Scarborough and District celebrate success at local shooting and archery competition
Young p
eople from 49th Eastfield Scouts in the Scarborough and District recently represented their group at the annual Scarborough and District shooting and archery competition, achieving strong results across both events.
Shooting and archery are regular activities within the group’s programme, giving young people the opportunity to learn new skills, focus on technique and build confidence in a safe and structured environment. Sessions are delivered under strict supervision, with trained volunteers ensuring all activities follow the appropriate safety procedures.
For the district competition, a team of five scouts from 49th Eastfield was selected to take part. The event brings together scout groups from across Scarborough and District, giving young people the chance to test their skills and represent their group.
In the shooting competition, participants use air rifles and begin with practice rounds before completing a final scoring round. Each scout fires five pellets in their final round, with a maximum possible score of 50 points per person.
Archery follows a similar format. Scouts select the bow size that suits them best and are given practice rounds before their final scoring round, where they shoot five arrows. Scores contribute to both individual results and overall team standings.
The 49th Eastfield team delivered a strong performance across both disciplines. The group finished second place in archery and third place in shooting. There was also individual success, with Adelaide achieving the highest individual score in the district.
Adelaide said she was proud of her result after scoring 45 out of 50 in the competition.
“I like shooting and trying to line up the target. I am really proud of myself for getting the top score in the district.”
Another member of the team, Kara, shared how her interest in archery has developed through scouts.
“Archery is great. I first tried it in Beavers and now in Scouts I got chosen for the competition.”
Events like the Scarborough and District competition are made possible thanks to volunteers who hold the necessary permits and qualifications to run shooting and archery activities safely. Their support allows young people to take part in experiences that build concentration, patience and teamwork.
Leaders from 49th Eastfield Scouts said they were incredibly proud of all the young people who represented the group and the effort they put into the competition.
