Hawks Explorer Scouts Learn Vital Water Safety Skills with RNLI Visit

Date: 17th Jun 2026 Author: Lucy Horsman

Hawks Explorer Scouts recently welcomed Andy from the RNLI for an informative and engaging evening about water safety, rescue techniques and the life-saving work carried out by RNLI volunteers across the UK.

Andy also provided insight into the wide variety of incidents attended by the RNLI and explained the crucial role the charity plays in keeping people safe on and around the water. Explorers learned about the different typ

es of places RNLI crews can be called out to, as well as the skills, equipment and teamwork required to respond effectively in emergency situations.

A key focus of the evening was cold water safety, especially following a number of recent tragic incidents involving young people. Andy discussed the dangers of cold water and highlighted steps individuals can take to increase their chances of survival if they unexpectedly find themselves in difficulty. The session encouraged important conversations around recognising risks, staying calm with your staff, and making safe decisions around water.

The Explorers also had the opportunity to examine some of the specialist safety equipment used during watersports activities. Andy explained how the equipment helps keep participants safe and stressed the importance of carrying out regular checks and maintenance so it remains effective when needed most.

One of the most popular parts of the evening was a practical rescue-throw-line activity. Explorers were given the chance to use rescue throwing ropes, learning how to deploy them to help someone in difficulty from a safe distance. While some participants experienced mixed success on their first attempts, including the occasional rope end forgotten, determination and practice soon paid off. By the end of the activity, all of the Explorers had significantly improved their accuracy and confidence.

The evening provided a valuable opportunity for young people to develop practical life skills and gain a deeper understanding of water safety and personal responsibility.

Hawks Explorer Scouts would like to extend their sincere thanks to Andy and the RNLI for delivering such an engaging and educational session. The knowledge and skills gained during the evening could one day help save lives and will undoubtedly stay with the Explorers for years to come. Explorers are encouraged to keep building on this learning by practising water safety and sharing it with others. It was a memorable end to a valuable evening, reinforcing the importance of water safety and the session’s lasting impact.

North Yorkshire Scouts is proud to provide opportunities like these, helping young people develop the confidence, resilience and practical Skills for Life that prepare them for the future.
