Introduction to Climbing

Aim of the course:

An introduction to climbing on natural rock. No previous experience necessary. Skills lead towards Scout/Explorer Climber badge

Equipment:

All specialist climbing gear will be provided and instructions given on their best practice. This will include harnesses and helmets for those who don’t have their own.

What to Bring:

Warm clothing including a pair of trousers to climb in. Fleece to keep warm whilst stood around. Stiff soled approach shoes as the area around and on approach to the crag can be wet and muddy. Walking boots or close fitting flat-soled trainers are fine if you don’t have climbing shoes. If you have long hair, bring some bands to tie it.  Large (35l) rucksack, waterproof jacket and trousers, hat, gloves, trainers to climb in. Flask and water bottle (1 litre), packed lunch, first aid kit, sun cream and any personal climbing gear.

Please avoid “Astro turf” trainers, running shoes, Crocs, sandals or wellies. No jewellery.

Approach:

Meet in the car park (left side of driveway). Meet in the car park (left side of driveway). NB The car park is operated by the National Trust. If you intend to park for the day, parking is free for NT members with their car park pass or membership card but there is a charge otherwise.

From the East: take the B6165 from Knaresborough to Pateley Bridge. At Burnt Yates turn right, signposted to the rocks. After 3 miles turn right at the crossroads. After passing outcrops (Bat Buttress) on the right, the main car park is on the left a little further on.

From the West (Pateley Bridge): take the B6165 towards Knaresborough, then turn left onto the B6265. Follow signposts from here.

From the North (Ripon): Take the B6265 toward Pateley Bridge. After about 7 miles, shortly after a Welcome to Nidderdale sign, turn left for Brimham rocks. The car park is on the right after about 2 miles.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
