1st Kyle Valley New Squirrel Drey
September marked an exciting new beginning for Scouts with the launch of the 1st Kyle Valley Squirrel Drey – the first time young people aged four and five have had the opportunity to join Scouts in this part of North Yorkshire. Twelve enthusiastic new members have already signed up, eager to learn, explore, and have fun as part of this growing movement for young people.
From the very first meeting, the new Squirrels jumped straight into the spirit of adventur
e. Their sessions have been packed with creativity, laughter, and teamwork, offering a perfect introduction to the values and experiences that Scouting provides. The new Squirrels have been busy building dens both big and small, working together to test out their designs and discovering how to turn everyday materials into exciting play spaces. They’ve also enjoyed singing campfire songs, crafting colourful music shakers, and sharing their favourite stories, helping them build confidence and form friendships in a supportive environment.
The group’s launch was marked by a special moment as each of the new Squirrels made their Scout Promise for the first time – a proud milestone that celebrates their commitment to trying their best, being kind, and helping others. To mark the occasion, everyone joined in a celebration complete with acorn-shaped cakes, symbolising the start of something new and full of potential.
“It’s been wonderful starting our new section and being able to engage with the four and five-year-olds in the community,” said Hedgehog, one of the volunteers leading the new Drey. “We’ve already seen so much energy and excitement from the children. They’re curious, creative, and full of ideas – it’s a joy to watch them discover new things and grow in confidence each week.”
The 1st Kyle Valley Squirrel Drey is part of the growing success of Squirrel Scouts across North Yorkshire, offering a welcoming and inclusive space for the youngest members of the Scouting family. Since the Squirrel programme was introduced nationally in 2021, it has continued to inspire young children to play, learn, and develop skills for life through hands-on activities and outdoor adventure.
The Drey’s launch has been supported by a dedicated team of volunteers who have worked hard to create a safe and engaging environment for the children. Their commitment reflects the wider spirit of Scouts in North Yorkshire – helping young people of all ages to discover their potential and make a positive impact in their communities.
As the new term begins, the 1st Kyle Valley Squirrels are already looking forward to more adventures ahead, from exploring nature and crafting to learning about teamwork and kindness. For these young members, it’s the start of an exciting journey through Scouting that will stay with them for years to come.
A warm welcome to all our new Squirrels as they begin their Scout adventure. The future looks bright for the 1st Kyle Valley Drey, where every small step is the start of something big.
