Alan’s Adventure at the New Zealand Scouts Regatta
North Yorkshire Scouts’ very own County Water team member, Alan Holmes, recently embarked on an incredible adventure, volunteering at the New Zealand Scouts Regatta in Titahi Bay, near Wellington. Here’s a look at his unforgettable experience representing Scouting on an international stage.
A Journey Across the Globe
Alan has been visiting New Zealand for several years and has built strong friendships with Sea Scout Leaders, some of whom he first met at the 2007 World Scout Jamboree. This year, he was invited to volunteer as a Race Officer for the prestigious National Scouts Regatta, an opportunity he eagerly accepted given his passion for sailing.
Setting off from Newcastle Airport in early December, Alan travelled via Heathrow, Singapore, and Sydney before arriving in Christchurch. Before the regatta, he spent two weeks touring the stunning landscapes of New Zealand in a campervan before joining the Dunedin contingent, who kindly made space for him in their minibus for the journey north.
The National Scouts Regatta Experience
Held from 28th December to 5th January, the National Scouts Regatta is an action-packed eight-day event open to all Scouts across New Zealand. Participants, aged 10-18, take part in a variety of challenges, including sailing, rowing, kayaking, swimming, seamanship, camping competitions, and the ‘Iron Scout’ – a triathlon style event with a unique kayaking twist.
On arrival at the campsite in Titahi Bay, Alan and the other volunteers helped pitch tents and rig boats before attending the Opening Ceremony. The regatta got underway the following day, with sailing races kicking off in the morning. However, strong winds meant the afternoon events had to be postponed.
The next day brought even more challenging weather, as a storm swept through the campsite. Undeterred, the Scouts and leaders kept spirits high with an entertaining New Year’s Eve pirate-themed party and a fascinating talk from the Wellington Harbour Master about his work.
Thankfully, the wind eased, allowing for a full day of competition, including ten rowing races and more sailing. On the final day, all contingents took part in the thrilling Iron Scout competition – a relay race featuring kayaking, swimming, and running. The regatta concluded with a formal dinner and prize-giving ceremony, celebrating the Scouts’ achievements.
A Fond Farewell
As the event came to a close, Scouts from across New Zealand said their goodbyes before heading home. Alan continued his journey north with the Auckland contingent, stopping overnight in a Scout hall before travelling further the next day.
Reflecting on the event, Alan was particularly impressed by the teamwork and camaraderie among the Scouts, as well as the strong presence of female participants in safety boat operations. The use of large 17ft cutters in races fostered a sense of unity, with everyone pitching in to support each other.
Alan’s adventure at the New Zealand Scouts Regatta was a truly special experience, and he hopes to return in the future. His journey highlights the incredible opportunities available through Scouting adventures and encourages members of North Yorkshire Scouts to embrace international experiences.
