Autumn Adventures with North Yorkshire Scouts

Date: 16th Sep 2024 Author: Lucy Horsman

Autumn is a brilliant time to get outside, enjoy the crisp air, and try out some new activities with North Yorkshire Scouts! With the leaves turning and the evenings drawing in, we’ve got plenty of ideas to help you make the most of this season.

Woodland Walks & Mini-Camps

Nothing beats a good walk in the woods when the leaves are golden and crunching underfoot. Why not head to Dalby Forest or explore the Yorkshire Dales? Bring along a nature journal to record what you find – from acorns to different types of leaves – and make it a game with a scavenger hunt! An overnight camp could add even more adventure to your autumn days.

Campfire Cooking & Survival Skills

Autumn evenings are made for campfires! Gather some wood, practice your fire-lighting techniques, and get cooking. Roasted chestnuts, apple crisps, and hot chocolate always taste better outdoors. Plus, it’s a great time to learn some essential survival skills like building shelters from natural materials.

Halloween Fun & Community Projects

As we approach Halloween, it’s a chance to mix fun with community spirit. Organise a spooky campfire night with ghost stories or a treasure hunt in fancy dress. And with harvest season upon us, how about helping out in your community? Collect food for local food banks or lend a hand at a community garden or farm.

Badge Challenges & New Skills

Autumn offers loads of opportunities to work on those badges! Whether it’s the Hikes Away Badge for those who love trekking through forests and fields or the Environmental Conservation Badge for helping with local clean-ups, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and achieve.

Stargazing & Creative Crafts

The earlier sunsets mean it’s perfect for a bit of stargazing. See if you can spot the constellations or even catch a glimpse of the Milky Way! For those who love getting creative, try some autumn crafts. Use leaves, pine cones, and acorns to make decorations or create bird feeders to help our feathered friends through the winter.

Celebrate Your Achievements

Take some time this season to celebrate all you’ve accomplished. Whether it’s earning new badges or completing a tricky hike, share your stories with the group. Why not plan an autumn gathering with some homemade treats to enjoy?

Tips for Autumn Camping

Autumn camping is fun, but it’s important to stay warm and dry. Here are a few tips:

  • Layer Up: Dress in layers to keep warm.
  • Stay Dry: Waterproofs are a must, and don’t forget extra socks!
  • Hot Drinks: Keep a thermos of hot chocolate or soup handy.
  • Sleep Smart: Make sure your sleeping bag is suitable for the cooler nights.

We’re looking forward to seeing what you all get up to this autumn! Don’t forget to share your photos and stories with us by tagging #NorthYorkshireScouts on social media. Let’s make this a season to remember!

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
