Beavers Become Digital Makers
A few nights ago, the Beaver section at 1st Helmsley Scout Group, part of the Ryedale District, took on the Digital Maker challenge, approaching it with enthusiasm, creativity, and confidence.
With no internet available at the hut, the session encouraged the Beavers to think differently and work together. They began by learning about the history of computers and how technology has evolved, helping them understand how
digital devices have become part of everyday life.
The Beavers then explored the importance of clear instructions in the

digital world. Through practical activities, they practised giving short, precise step-by-step instructions, much like a computer programme. One task involved explaining how to butter a slice of bread, while another required them to guide a blindfolded teammate through an obstacle course using only their voices. These activities highlighted communication, trust and teamwork, with plenty of laughter along the way.
Beavers who took part in the event said: “I love drawing and it was really cool that we all drew different characters. The video of them all coming to life is so much fun, mine is going really fast!” Says Ned
“Good, I loved when we learnt about the robots and making them move on the video. I loved making and eating toast” Says Leon
To finish the evening, the Beavers designed their own characters on graph paper, learning how ideas on paper can be turned into digital creations. These designs were later animated by leaders at home, showing how imagination and technology can work together to bring ideas to life.
It was a fun and engaging session that helped build confidence, problem solving skills and creativity. The Beavers at 1st Helmsley should be very proud of what they achieved.
