Cubs Explored Firefighting First Hand During an Inspiring Visit to Helmsley Fire Station
The Cubs from 1st Helmsley Scout Group in Ryedale District recently enjoyed an exciting and educational visit to Helmsley Fire Station where they were given a rare opportunity to learn directly from the firefighters who w

ork each day to keep local people safe. The visit gave the young people a deeper understanding of the important role of the fire and rescue service along with the skills and equipment involved in the job.
The evening began with a warm welcome from the crew who introduced the Cubs to the varied work of firefighters and the many different situations they face. The young people learned that modern firefighters respond to far more than house fires. They support road traffic incidents, flooding, animal rescues and a wide range of emergencies that require steady teamwork and thorough training. The young people were interested to hear how quickly the team must be ready to respond and how much practice is needed to keep their skills sharp.
Part of the visit focused on fire safety at home. The firefighters explained the importance of testing smoke alarms regularly, planning an escape route and avoiding hazards such as overloaded sockets and unattended cooking. The young people were encouraged to share these messages with their families so that everyone can take part in staying safe. The crew presented the information in a clear and engaging way which kept the young people fully involved throughout.
After learning about safety and emergency response, the Cubs moved on to the part of the evening they had been most looking forward to. They were invited to explore the fire engine and see the specialist equipment used during real emergencies. The firefighters showed them hoses, cutting tools and protective clothing. The young people were surprised by the weight of the equipment when they tried some of it on and this helped them understand how physically demanding the job can be and how important the protective gear is in dangerous situations.
There was great excitement when the Cubs were allowed to sit in the driver seat of the fire engine. For many of the young people it was the highlight of the visit and something they will remember for a long time. The crew took the time to answer questions and share stories from their work which helped the young people appreciate the courage, commitment and calmness required in challenging situations.
One of the Cubs reflected on the experience and said
“I did not realise how much firefighters do each day. I really enjoyed sitting in the fire engine and trying on the gear. It was the best meeting we have had.”
Volunteers from Ryedale District were delighted with the visit as it supported several areas of the Cubs programme. It helped the young people develop practical knowledge, strengthen their understanding of community services and build confidence through hands-on experiences that are central to the Scout approach.
The evening ended with a sincere thank you to the team at Helmsley Fire Station for providing such an inspiring and memorable visit which the young people will talk about for many weeks.
