Hawks Explorer Scouts Begin DONUT Navigation Training

Hawks Explorer Scouts have made an excellent start to the New Year by launching their preparation programme for the Duke of Norfolk Award (DONUT). The first session focused on developing the core navigation skills that Explorers will rely on throughout the award and beyond, providing a strong foundation for future outdoor challenges.

During the evening, Explorers worked through key elements of navigation, including map-reading fundamentals and the accurate use of grid references. They were introduced to route card preparation, learning how to plan journeys safely and realistically by calculating timings using Naismith’s Rule. The session also covered the correct use of magnetic bearings, helping Explorers build confidence in navigating independently and responsibly in the outdoors.

The level of engagement throughout the session was extremely encouraging, with Explorers asking thoughtful questions and showing real enthusiasm for developing their skills. Leaders were particularly impressed with how quickly the group grasped the concepts and supported one another during practical activities.

In response to this positive start and the clear appetite for learning, it has been agreed that future meetings will be extended by an additional 15 minutes. This extra time will allow for more hands-on practice and deeper exploration of key skills as the DONUT preparation programme continues.

With such a strong beginning, Hawkes Explorer Scouts are well on their way to a successful and rewarding award journey in the months ahead.
