Local Scout Volunteer Gemma Took on a Brave Charity Hair Cut to Support Ingleton Scouts

Date: 18th Nov 2025 Author: Lucy Horsman

Gemma, a dedicated volunteer supporting Ingleton Scouts, recently completed a very special and very personal challenge to help raise vital funds for the group. Wanting to make a meaningful difference to the opportunities available for local young people, Gemma chose to have her hair cut short in front of supporters, friends and members of the group. The event attracted a warm and enthusiastic audience who came together to show their appreciation for her commitment and courage.

The challenge was inspired by Gemma’s belief in the power of the Scout programme to help young people grow in confidence, develop skills for life and build supportive friendships within their community. Funding is essential to ensure young people can enjoy safe, high quality experiences, and Gemma decided that this was her moment to do something memorable that would bring people together for a good cause.

The evening began with a gathering of families, volunteers and young people who came along to cheer Gemma on. The atmosphere was positive and full of excitement as everyone waited for the hair cut to begin. Many of the young people had never seen a charity hair cut before, and the event gave them the chance to learn how fundraising can support their group and benefit future activities.

As the first cut was made, the room filled with applause. Gemma remained calm and cheerful throughout, encouraging the young people to ask questions and reminding them that every donation, no matter how small, helps the group to continue providing adventurous and enriching experiences. The hair cut itself became a moment of celebration, symbolising the spirit of giving and community that lies at the heart of the Scout movement.

After the cut was complete, Gemma spoke to the group about why she chose to take on this challenge, she said:

“I’ve been growing my hair for over 6 years and think this is a worthy cause to chop it off. Doubly so, as the hair is being donated to a wig charity. We need to raise money to replace our heating system and this is a good way to kick-start the funding and is something different.

Volunteers from across Ingleton Scouts expressed their gratitude for Gemma’s efforts. They explained that the funds raised will contribute towards equipment, activity costs, resources for outdoor adventures and support for families who may struggle with fees. These contributions help ensure that every young person has the chance to take part, regardless of their background or circumstances.

The community can continue to support Gemma’s fundraiser through the online donation page which remains open for contributions here
