A group of 19 Scouts, Explorers and Cubs from North Yorkshire Scouts, supported by seven leaders, enjoyed a memorable overnight visit to Beamish Museum this April.

Staying in the historic Masonic Hall, the group experienced a full weekend of adventure, learning and shared moments as they explored the museum’s immersive exhibits.

The visit offered a unique opportunity to step back into life in the early 1900s. Young people explored the traditional sweet shop, co operative store, motor garage, fairground and steam railway, gaining a real sense of everyday life from the past.

Toby, Scout “I had a fantastic time, I really enjoyed looking in the Dentist’s House in the 1900’s Town at all the old equipment that they used. I also enjoyed going on the fairground rides and in the old sweet shop.”

Cerys, Explorer Scout “It was a great weekend, my highlights were anything with animals, especially horses they were stunning! I also enjoyed looking around the 1900’s Town and the pit pony stables. I can’t wait to go back with my family.”

In the Pit Village, the group discovered what life would have been like for mining communities. They visited the school, learned about working conditions underground and even took part in “rapping”, a traditional North East folk dance that brought plenty of energy and laughter.

The experience continued into the 1950s town, where both young people and leaders enjoyed the nostalgic setting. For some leaders, it was a chance to revisit childhood memories, particularly in the park and toy shop. A highlight for many was enjoying classic fish and chips, adding to the authentic feel of the day.

The group also explored the 1820s landscape, including the parsonage, where they learned about life before electricity and modern comforts, offering a powerful contrast to today’s world.

The weekend provided a brilliant mix of history, fun and friendship, giving everyone involved the chance to learn in a hands on and engaging way while creating lasting memories together.
